The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup came to Sydney in September 2022, with 12 nations competing for the title of World Champion. The United States, as expected, won the tournament, but there were plenty of exciting moments captured along the way.
I had the opportunity to cover the tournament for Australian Associated Press, and it was a baptism of fire for someone who had only shot one basketball match before. I was shooting 3-4 matches a day across two venues in the Sydney Olympic Park.
I was also working under the pressure of filing live images through the matches, which meant I had to be quick to capture key moments and ensure that I was sending enough images to keep the wire up to date. To learn more about my sports photography workflow, click here.
Despite the challenges, I thoroughly enjoyed covering the tournament. The level of play was very high, and there were some incredible athletes on display.
I used the following kit to shoot all these:
- Nikon Z9 x2
- Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8
- Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8
- Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8
- Nikon 50mm f/1.2
- Nikon 105mm f/1.4
- Nikon 400mm f/2.8
